‘Tough Guise’ author to
speak at UW conference
The author of a new video that explores media violence and its impact on women and children worldwide will be at the University of Washington Thursday, March 23, to speak at the Images of Youth 2000 Conference.
Jackson Katz, author of the video, Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity, will deliver the keynote address at the conference, which is presented by the Teen Futures Media Network.
His video premiered on March 2 at the United Nations’ Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium as part of the UN’s exploration of how the media culture of violence impacts women and children worldwide.
This video, released by the Media Education Foundation, examines the connections between portrayals of violent masculinity in popular culture and real-life violence - including the worldwide pandemic of male violence against women and the recent rash of school shootings.
Katz is the founder and director of MVP Strategies, an organization that provides gender violence prevention training and materials.
