University faculty, staff give $1.1 million to state’s Combined Fund Drive

The UW Combined Fund Drive (CFD) for campaign year 2000 received more than $1.1 million in contributions from faculty and staff.

The CFD, which directs Washington State employee donations to more than 1,600 charities, drew an average donation of $222.59 from 5,083 UW faculty and staff - 25 percent of UW employees. The total of $1,131,443 is about $20,000 less than last year.

“The University would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the people who donated this year and in years past,” said Jackie Levine, chair of the UW CFD.

A CFD committee reviews applications once each year from charities that want to be a part of the annual fund-raising drive. Every charity is screened thoroughly before it is included in the drive. The charities must be nonprofit organizations 501(c)(3), identified and qualified by the IRS to have tax-deductible status for donations. Only 5 percent of donations are spent on administering the CFD. The rest of the money goes directly to the charities.

Levine also thanked Bob Bratager, the human resources manager for the Applied Physics Library, who is stepping down from the CFD steering committee.

“We would like to say a special thank you to Bob. Through the years he has assumed a tremendous amount of duties and responsibilities in the name of the CFD. We appreciate everything he has done and we will miss him,” Levine said.

Next year’s campaign chair will be Pat Poulin, Director of Community Based Services and Volunteer Services at the UW Medical Center. ¶
