Public health programs among top five

The UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine’s master’s degree program ranked fifth in the nation in this year’s U.S. News & World Report graduate school survey. The master’s degree program in health services administration, which is a separate category in the U.S. News’ evaluations, shared fourth place with two other schools. At the UW, this program is located in the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Services.

The other top five public health programs in this year’s survey, in order, are at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Michigan.

For the health services administration survey, the University of Michigan was first, followed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Northwestern University. In the fourth rank, along with the UW, were the University of Minnesota and the University of Pennsylvania.

The UW’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine is the only school of its kind in the Northwest. It trains epidemiologists, biostatisticians, toxicologists, industrial safety and health experts, health administrators, health policy analysts and public health workers. In addition to Health Services, there are departments of Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Epidemiology and Pathobiology. The school has almost 600 graduate students.
