Members of the Gates family cross the Commons during their tour of Mary Gates Hall Monday. A capacity crowd attended the dedication of the building as a center for undergraduate learning. The ceremonies included remarks by Governor Gary Locke, President Richard L. McCormick, Bill Gates, two Mary Gates scholars and Fred Campbell, dean of undergraduate education and vice provost. After a portrait of Mary Gates was unveiled in the Commons, her namesake building was opened to the general public, with student-led demonstrations of research projects and student-created art on display throughout the building.
