Undergraduates Susanne Bard and Katrina Dlugosch work at the Muddy River lahar, an area laid bare by a mud flow in 1980. In this photo, taken by their instructor Roger del Moral in 1996, one can see the cover of lupins and mosses. The occasional conifer on the lahar is the results of seed blown in from nearby stands of trees that survived the eruption. |

Professor Roger del Moral works at Pine Creek at the 4,500 foot level of Mount St. Helens in 1980. The ridge was scoured and silt deposited by flood waters after the Shoestring Glacier melted following the eruption. |
