BIKE TO WORK: Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day, and at least one of the bicycling stations to be set up that day is on campus - on the Burke Gilman Trail at Rainier Vista. At the stations you can get free water bottles, T-shirts and bus maps, along with refreshments and mechanic service. Enjoy the ride!
A GRAVE MATTER: When UW scientist Jens Gundlach reported that the Earth is lighter than we had thought, thanks to a more precise measuring of the gravitational constant, Jay Leno was listening. In his opening monologue recently, Leno mentioned the new weigh-in, saying the reason the Earth was lighter was that the previous measurement had been taken just after the holidays.
KUDOS: J. Michael Brown, chairman of the geophysics department, has been elected a Fellow of the American Geo-physical Union, an honor that recognizes his application of basic physics to elucidate temperature, elasticity, and composition in the Earths core and mantle . . . Professor of Education Jerald Forster received the Advocate of the Year award from the Washington School Counselor Association for his positive influence on so many people in the field of school counseling, both as a counselor educator and as a highly involved professional. . . . Andy Lingwall, print media lecturer at UW Tacoma, has been awarded a fellowship to study visual journalism for educators with the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. Lingwall also is faculty adviser to the Ledger, UWTs student newspaper, and a doctoral student in the College of Education. ¶
