JEFFERSON HONOREES: A regular volunteer for Harborview Medical Center is one of five people in the state to be given Jefferson Awards. Sponsored in Washington by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the awards are part of a national program to honor citizen involvement in our communities. Jeanette Day, the winner, is a former Harborview burn patient who now offers patients a firsthand account of surviving and what to expect. Two UW faculty were nominees for the award. Michael Copass, professor of medicine and director of the Emergency Trauma Center at Harborview, has been associated with the Medic One Program since its inception in 1970. The program is built on the concept that providing life-support care outside of the hospital could be successful in saving the lives of the critically ill, or trauma victims. Michael Verchot, director of the UW’s Business and Economic Development Program, has been the organizing force that enabled 150 business school students, working with alumni and Seattle Rotary Club mentors, to help 60 inner-city small businesses create 150 new jobs.

NOBEL GRAD STUDENTS: Two UW graduate students are attending the 50th Anniversary Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany this summer. The students attending are Heather Rothfuss, from Chemical Engineering, and Thomas Luu, from the Institute for Nuclear Theory. Rothfuss and Luu are among 36 American students in biology, physics and chemistry who will meet in small groups with 66 Nobel laureates.
