Dr. Michael Bevan, professor in the School of Medicines Department of Immunology and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has received the annual Excellence in Mentoring Award from the American Association of Immunologists (AAI). He was presented with the award at the joint annual meeting of the AAI and the Clinical Immunology Society in Seattle in mid-May. A letter from the AAIs executive director, M. Michele Hogan, to Bevan notes that the award, recognizes the invaluable contributions you have made to the field as a teacher and mentor and the profound impact you have had on many lives. This is only the third year the award has been given. Those nominated must be members of AAI who have demonstrated a long-standing commitment to mentoring. Nominations are made by former trainees. Bevan earned his Ph.D. degree in immunology for work done at the National Institute of Medical Research in Mill Hill, London, in 1972. Before he joined the UW School of Medicine faculty in 1990, he held positions at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1991. His laboratory focuses on cytotoxic, or killer, T cells and especially on how these cells choose their targets. ¶ University Week The faculty and staff publication of the University of Washington uweek@u.washington.edu June 1, 2000
