SPJ HONORS: The Society of Professional Journalists in Western Washington recently honored the KUOW 94.9 news staff with the Western Washington Sweepstakes Award for best radio news in the Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Alaska). In addition to winning the Sweepstakes Award, KUOW 94.9 also received 11 individual awards in eight different categories, including four first- place awards. Individual reporters honored included Deborah Brandt, first in business, economic and consumer reporting; Cathy Duchamp, first in investigative reporting and honorable mention for health/science reporting; Sam Eaton, first for sports reporting and honorable mention for documentary; Peter Aronson, second for feature news reporting; Orlando de Guzman and Robert Smith, honorable mention in spot news reporting; Sam Eaton, Orlando de Guzman and Peter Aronson, honoroable mention for continuing coverage; and Jason Paur, honorable mention for sports reporting.
The UWs alumni magazine, Columns, also did well in the SPJ competiton, winning six awards. Winners included editor Tom Griffin, a first in social issues reporting and a second in periodic columns; free-lancer Brad Broberg, second for business reporting; art director Ken Shafer, third for cover page layout; associate editor Jon Marmor, honorable mention for personality profiles; and free-lancer Julie Garner, honorable mention for science and health reporting.
TECH HONORS: The UW-produced Northwest Science and Technology magazine won an award in the trade/news articles category in the international competition sponsored by the Society for Technicial Communication. The article, by Matthew Carr and Deborah Illman, had earlier taken honors in the Puget Sound chapter competition.
KUDOS: Education Professor Sam Wineburg received the Relating Research to Practice Award from the American Educational Research Association. The award is given to a scholar for an article published in a nonresearch publication . . . Lizabeth Wilson, associate director of libraries for research and instructional services, received the Margaret E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award given by the Reference and Users Services Association, a division of the American Library Association . . . History Professor John Findlay received the Governors Award from the Washington State Historical Society. Findlay was honored for editing Pacific Northwest Quarterly, founding the Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest and creating a Web site that provides curriculum for secondary teachers and students . . . Botany Professor Estella Leopold has been elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society, a learned society devoted to the advancement of scientific and scholarly inquiry . . . Social Work Professor Jeanette Semke has been chosen for the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholars Program, which is dedicated to improved health-care outcomes for older Americans and their caregivers . . . Computer Science & Engineering Professor David Saliesin will receive the Computer Graphics Achievement Award from ACM SIGGRAPH for pioneering the field of non-photorealistic rendering . . . English Professor Catherine Sanok received the Van Courtlandt Elliott Prize from the Medieval Society of America for an outstanding first article in the field . . . Jon Jory, who joins the School of Drama in the fall, received New Yorks Drama League award for Unique Contribution to the Theatre. ¶
