“High-Altitude Medicine: An Alpinist’s Survival Guide” is the topic for the next Healthy-U presentation at the REI store in downtown Seattle. Dr. Mark Neagle, acting assistant professor of medicine practicing at Harborview Medical Center, will speak from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 17. Climbers will learn how to prepare and handle the problems of acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema and high-altitude cerebral edema. The talks are free.

The Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association recently presented a generous contribution to support axonal injury research in the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Ransom, professor and chair of the Department of Neurology. Dr. Angus Brown, research assistant professor of neurology, is a collaborator in this work. The researchers study the basic mechanisms of axon impairment to better understand spinal cord injury. Axons are long extensions of nerve cells that make up nerve fibers. ¶
