Three UW faculty earn department endowed professorship positions

Three UW professors have been named to endowed chairs in their respective departments.

Ed Lazowska

Ed Lazowska, professor and chair of Computer Science & Engineering, has been named to the first Bill & Melinda Gates Endowed Chair in Computer Science. Two endowed chairs in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering were created last fall through a $3 million gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Lazowska, whose appointment was effective July 1, is internationally recognized for his work on the design and analysis of advanced computer systems.

David Hawkins

David Hawkins, a professor of social work and director of the Social Development Research Group, is now the Social Work Endowed Professor in Prevention. Ronya and George Kozmetsky and the RGK Foundation made the leadership gifts to endow the professorship. The Kozmetskys are UW alumni and active volunteers for the School of Social Work. The fellowship is the first in the school.

Tracy MacKenzie

Tracy McKenzie, an associate professor of history, has been named the Howard Keller Professor of History. The professorship was established through a gift from Howard and Frances Keller, members of the history department’s visiting committee. Howard Keller has been an access student and has taken a variety of history classes for a number of years. The professorship is the second for the history department. ¶
