The 31st International Narcotics Research Conference has been meeting on campus this week, with more than 300 scientists from around the world gathering to share recent findings on the fight against drug abuse and addiction. The conference focused specifically on heroin and related opiates, but work was presented concerning all drugs of abuse. Topics ranged from the molecular mechanisms of drug abuse to the genetics of addiction. Dr. Charles Chavkin, UW professor of pharmacology in the School of Medicine, organized the conference. He is also the acting secretary for the organization this year. The conference was based in Kane Hall and the final session was Thursday morning, July 20. ¶ University Week The faculty and staff publication of the University of Washington uweek@u.washington.edu July 20, 2000
