Dr. Adam Drewnowski, professor of epidemiology, adjunct professor of medicine and director of the Nutritional Sciences Program in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, is involved in research on supertasters - those people who react strongly to bitterness in foods. The average person's reaction to this research was the subject of the April 24-28 "Betty" comic strip nationally syndicated by Gary Delainey and Gerry Rasmussen. Drewnowski was also quoted extensively in a May 1 Wall Street Journal article, "Fill "Er Up," on why Americans are eating larger portions, snacking more during the day, and generally following poorer dietary habits than in the past. And Drewnowski was quoted in the May/June issue of Psychology Today magazine. Drewnowski said his studies indicate that as people age, many develop a taste for healthful foods like fruits and vegetables. "I suspect that changes in taste are in service of energy needs," Drewnowski said. "When you're younger and growing, you need to maximize energy. You need sugar and fat."
