COMPLAINTS WANTED: Well not really, but Parking Services wants to be sure to hear from you if you have any concerns, comments or complaints about campus access during this weekend's Seattle Seahawks game. The Seahawks play their first game of the NFL season in Husky Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and the team is in charge of managing parking for the event. However, that doesn't mean Parking Services has abdicated its responsibility. "If you have any problems, don't call the Seahawks," says Parking Services Manager Carl Root. "Contact us and we'll work with the team to correct it for future games." Complaints can most easily be registered by e-mailing parking@u.washington.edu or by visiting the parking Web site at http://www.washington.edu/admin/parking. HIGH SCHOOL HAVEN: Students from urban forestry and landscape architecture teamed up this spring with students, faculty and administrators at Garfield High School to create a sustainable community landscape for Garfield. After completing the installation, the students gave a public presentation on their work at the high school. Forest Resources Professor Linda Chalker-Scott was the supervising teacher. LIVING MEMORIAL: The late John Harlett, who was deputy director of the Applied Physics Lab until his death in 1999, recently received a unique memorial. Parishioners from Harlett's church recently traveled to Tijuana, Mexico to help build homes, clinics and other community facilities for the poor, dedicating their work to Harlett, who was the confirmation teacher for many of the participants. The dedication is a tradition with the group, which each year chooses someone who has died the previous year. When the construction was complete, mementos of Harlett were placed in a box that was sealed into the concrete roof. KUDOS: Education Professor Ted Kaltsounis received the Spirit of Liberty Award from the Ethnic Heritage Council. The award is given to a naturalized citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the United States while retaining his or her heritage . . . Marine Affairs Professor David Fluharty has been appointed to a third term on the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council . . . Kathy Hall, an editor in Environmental Health and Cathy Schwartz, a graphic designer in Fisheries, have won a national Excellence Award from the Society for Technical Communications for their newsletter, Environmental Health News. ¶ |
