Ethnic Cultural Theatre marks temporary closure

The Ethnic Cultural Theatre will host a series of events to mark the theatre’s closure for renovations, set to begin at the end of the quarter. Events include:

Nov. 17, A Tribute to Octavio Paz: El Cantaro Roto, a bilingual, choral staged reading of the writings of the first Mexican writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, edited by Jose Carillo and directed by Olga Sanchez, 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 2, Keeper of the Gates, a staged reading of a new work, which tells the fictional story of the final days of a prominent civil rights activist, written by Nancy Rawles and directed by Valerie Curtis-Newton, 8 p.m.

Dec. 7-9, Voices from the Storm: Selections from King Lear, a collaboration between an actor and a dancer, exploring Shakespeare’s famous text through sound and movement, adapted and performed by Shanga Parker and Rob Kitsos, 7:30 p.m.

All events are free, although a $5 donation is requested for Voices from the Storm. For further information, call 543-4635.

The theatre is expected to reopen during the fall of 2001.
