ARTS AND PLANTS: The Arboretum is hosting a Native American Holiday Arts Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. The event includes local artists, storytelling and a tour of the Arboretum, focusing on native plants. Handmade baskets, carvings, flatwork pieces and other things by Native American artists will be on sale.
The Arboretums Education Department will present its Native Plants and People program throughout the day. Created by ethnobotanist Heidi Bohan Bennett, it features artifacts and role playing activities designed to teach students about how native plants were used in the daily life of the Coast Salish people.
NEW DIRECTOR: Professor of Nursing Marjorie Muecke, a nurse anthropologist, has been appointed director of the Southeast Asia Center and chair of the Southeast Asia Studies Program in the Jackson School of International Studies. She will also continue her teaching and research roles in the School of Nursing.
PHOTO CREDIT: Art Professor John Young, one of the creators of the new Public Art Program we profiled last week, has asked us to publish the name of the photographer whose image of Hammering Man appeared with the story. He is John Stamets, a lecturer in photography for the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. His name appeared on the poster image, but in our reproduction it was too small to read.
