TOPS IN TECH: Northwest Science & Technology magazine, a regional science news publication of the UW, won Best of Show at the recent publication competition of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). The magazine is edited by Deborah Illman, Assistant Professor of Technical Communication. Also winning first place in the category of Trade/News Articles was a story about geckos written by Stacey Combes, graduate student in the UW zoology department. Both the magazine and article now advance to the national/international competition to be held by STC later this spring.
CANCER CARE: Betty Johanna, Secretary Senior in the deans office of Ocean & Fishery Sciences and a cancer survivor, is one of five people from Washington State selected to speak before the Presidents Cancer Panel Feb. 1-2 in Los Angeles. The five presenters will speak on why all Americans dont get the best cancer care.
BEST IN BRICK: Mary Gates Hall was one of 11 winners of the Masonry Institute of Washingtons annual Excellence in Masonry Design awards. Mary Gates collected an Honor Award, the associations top recognition - one of three projects in that category. The $30.5 million Mary Gates project involved restoring an existing 1928 Gothic-style building and 1949 addition, plus building a new addition designed to match the original architecture.
