Preparing for battle UW students (left to right) Michele Laperna, Kyle Pendergrass, Nels Jewell-Larsen and David Parker prepare their latest creation for a head-to-head contest Saturday with robots from other area teams. The four are members of the Rainier Roboteers, a team that includes students from the UW and Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma and which is hosting a Robotics Festival scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bank of America Pavilion Annex on the UW campus. Although judges will award prizes for the best performing machines, the event will also provide a practice run for regional and national competitions. Smaller robots from the Seattle Robotics Society and other UW groups will demonstrate robotic sumo wrestling, soccer and maze maneuvering prowess. Photo by Kathy Sauber PHOTO: KS20010085_15a |

This device - a torsion pendulum with 10 holes suspended by a tungsten fiber so thin it is barely visible in the photo - was used by UW scientists to measure the strength of gravity at a distance of just 0.2 millimeter. The pendulum hangs less than a millimeter above a rotating plate that also has 10 holes. The plate exerts gravitational twist on the pendulum that is measured by bouncing a laser beam off a mirror at the top of the pendulum. Photo by Mary Levin |
