Third round UIF finalists named
Nine University Initiatives Fund (UIF) preliminary proposals have been selected for submission as full proposals in the third round of interdisciplinary UIF competition. Out of 27 preliminary proposals submitted from schools, colleges, and administrative offices across the University, eight academic initiatives and one administrative initiative will be considered for funding. Full proposals are due April 30, and UIF-3 awards will be announced by President Richard L. McCormick and Provost Lee L. Huntsman in June.
The UIF was established by President McCormick in 1996 to allow the University to invest in transformative, cutting-edge initiatives through internal reallocation. A 1 percent assessment on all UW operating budgets supports the UIF each biennium. Sixty percent of the fund will support the interdisciplinary, cross-unit initiatives chosen in the current competition; 40 percent will be allocated to support within-unit initiatives, submitted separately.
The nine preliminary proposals were selected by Provost Huntsman and the UIF advisory committee for their potential to meet the UIF challenge: to move the University forward in areas of comparative advantage that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Abstracts of the preliminary proposals are available on the UIF Web site at http://www.washington.edu/uif/ or by clicking on Strategies and Initiatives from the UW homepage.
