Healing Garden on display

UW Medical Center’s new Healing Garden is ready for visitors from the Society for Arts in Healthcare conference, which is meeting in downtown Seattle this week. Tours at UWMC on Saturday will include the garden, along with other aspects of the medical center’s Art Program. The Healing Garden, which is in a terrace space south of the Barrel Vault on the third floor, was planned and built by a combined fine arts/landscape architecture class, part of the Public Art Curriculum supported by UW Tools for Transformation funding. Results of the study done as part of the planning will be presented at the conference by Daniel Winterbottom, associate professor of landscape architecture. Below, Winterbottom does some work on wood bench pieces.

Neuroscience for kids
In early March several classes of elementary school science students attended demonstrations and exhibits in the Health Sciences Lobby for Brain Awareness Week. The event was organized, as in the past several years, by Dr. Eric Chudler, research associate professor of anesthesiology. Chudler, who also speaks frequently to science classes in schools, maintains a very rich Web site, Neuroscience for Kids, which is supported by a Science Education Partnerships Award from the National Center of Research Resources. See the web site at http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/neurok.html
