HOOSIER RETURNS: Ernest R. Davidson, who spent more than two decades on the UW chemistry faculty before leaving for Indiana University in Bloomington, will return to the UW next year as emeritus professor in chemistry. Davidson joined the Washington faculty as an associate chemistry professor in 1962 and was named a chemistry professor in 1968. He joined the Indiana faculty in 1984 and became the IU chemistry chairman in 1999. He will return to the UW for the 2002 school year. The native of Terre Haute, Ind., received his bachelor’s degree from the Rose Polytechnic Institute (now the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) in Terre Haute, and earned his doctorate from Indiana University. His research primarily is focused on computational quantum chemistry.

SUMMER LEARNING: This summer 50 students from South Korea are attending the UW, courtesy of their phone company. The students, subscribers of SK Telecom’s TTL cellular phone service, were chosen from 35,000 applicants for the program. While they’re here, they’re studying business English, marketing and cultural awareness, and also volunteering at charitable institutions. Some among the group will be chosen as new employees of SK Telecom. Not a bad way to reward your loyal subscribers.

SUMMER EATING: By now, most U-District denizens are probably aware that the Neighborhood Farmer’s Market is open at the University Heights Community Center every Saturday morning. But starting this month, a favorite attraction returns to the market, “What’s Cookin’” chef demonstrations. At 10 a.m. on selected Saturdays, chefs at well-known local restaurants come to the market and prepare an onsite recipe using only fresh farmer’s market produce. The next chef in line is Tom Douglas of Etta’s, Palace Kitchen and the Dahlia Lounge, who will appear July 28. The demonstrations continue through September; the market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 3.

CORRECTION: The URL given last week for the new Web work request form was missing a crucial ending. The correct URL is http://www.washington.edu/admin/facserv/workrequest.html .

KUDOS: Speech Communication Professor Leah Ceccarelli’s book, Shaping Science with Rhetoric: The Cases of Dobzhansky, Schrodinger and Wilson, has just been published by the University of Chicago Press.
