Free online classes ready in non-credit format
The UW and Learning Network have launched a dozen online quick courses, free to anyone with a computer, a connection to the Internet, and a desire to learn.
These non-credit courses are based on full-length, college-level classes taught online by the UW. They are immediately available at Learning Network's site for Lifelong Learning, http://lifelong.learningnetwork.com/
The quick courses are entirely Web-based and designed for self-study at the student's own pace. Each includes an introduction, two to five lessons, short multiple-choice quizzes, sidebars, book lists for recommended reading, and a conclusion reinforcing concepts covered in the lessons.
Students who want to learn more can follow links from Learning Network's home page to the UW Web site to enroll in the full, instructor-led, fee-based versions of the online courses. They will also be able to buy books, CDs, and other materials referenced in the courses through the Learning Network Store.
We want to demonstrate the power and appeal of online learning, particularly for people whose schedules make it difficult to attend a physical classroom, said David Szatmary, Vice Provost for Educational Outreach at the UW. We also want to highlight the variety of resources the UW provides and the University's commitment to public service.
