High school and college students from across the United States and Brazil cheered on their robots last weekend at a regional contest of the nationwide FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The mechanical competitors, which averaged the size of a coffee table, competed against one another in two-robot teams, with each team attempting to outdo the other in shooting soccer balls into mobile goals.
