Astronomy Professor Woody Sullivan, left, and Instrument Maker Larry Stark check out their re-installation of the sundial that has graced this campus since 1912 when graduates gave it as their class gift. The first location of the dial is unknown, but it has had at least three subsequent locations: First, at the center of present Red Square, before it ceased being green in 1970; Second, at the base of the flagpole between Odegaard Library and Kane Hall (1970–99); and now on Rainier Vista, just to the south of Frosh Pond.

James Green, left, senior anthropology lecturer, and some of the students in his comparative study of death class, talk about “Doc” Maynard’s role in the founding of Seattle over the pioneer doctor’s grave in Lake View Cemetery. Cemeteries in the 19th century were placed far from human habitation for hygienic reasons and Lake View was then a remote hillside.

Cathy Taylor, an associate professor in the UW’s College of Education, was recently given the Washington Award for Excellence in Teacher Preparation. She said watching her children learn to play soccer reinforced her ideas about education.

The event also included a biking fashion show, free bike checks, and sale and fitting of helmets.
