The major in GLL offers training in verbal interpretation and analysis useful for any career that involves formulating and solving problems, especially for those students with some special interest in Europe and the German-speaking countries. It provides excellent preparation for students planning to do graduate work in German literature or linguistics, and also for those who wish to teach German in K-12. Stress is placed on the critical analysis of literary texts, both in English and in German, and the development of high proficiency in language fluency, grammar, and style.
Major requirement : 53 credits
(1) 15 credits from the following: GERMAN 311, 312, and either 322 or 323.
(2) 15 credits from the following: GERMAN 411, 412, 421, 422, 423, or 495.
(3) One of the following for 5 credits: GERMAN 333, 334, 401 or 403. A high degree of proficiency is required for successful completion of any of these. For this reason students may wish to take one of the 301-303 series (as part of 18 credits in (4) below) before attempting attempting GERMAN 333, 334, 401 or 403.
A student whose proficiency is extremely good may substitute a course in literature to satisfy requirement (3) by first passing an examination administered by the Language Coordinator.
(4) 18 credits in 300-400 level German courses which may include (a) no more than 4 credits of GERMAN 395, 396; (b) no more than 5 credits of GERMAN 447 and (c) no more than 5 credits of 446. However, credits from any two of the following 200-level courses may also be included: GERMAN 210, 220, 243, 293, 295.
With the permission of the Undergraduate Advisor, students may also take courses outside the Germanics Department relevant either to German history, culture, art, or general literary studies as part of the 18 credits.
SPECIALIZATION IN LINGUISTICS
Students majoring in GLL and wishing to specialize in linguistics must take German 451 and 452 as part of (4) above. They may also count credits earned in graduate courses in Germanic linguistics as part of (4) and, with the advisor’s permission, may also count linguistics courses taken in other departments.
