May News from the Chair

Dear friends:

The month of May is the absolute peak for Germanics events this year. We just celebrated Austrian literature and culture at a conference last weekend where some of you came to sessions and receptions. The weather played along, Mt. Rainier showed itself, and everyone went back to their home institutions thinking this is paradise. Which it is, most days.

Inge Stephan, our guest from Humboldt University in Berlin, will kick off the May event schedule with a lecture on "Eisige Helden: Kältekult und Männlichkeit in der Moderne" this Friday, May 2, 3:00 pm in the Rey Library (Denny 308).

Our graduate students participated in the planning of a conference on "Conception and Consumption" which will take place May 8-9 with parallel sessions in the Simpson Center of the Humanities and the Rey Library.

Professor Gabriele Dürbeck is giving a lecture on "Das transdramatische Theater Elfriede Jelineks" on Friday, May 16, at 1:30 in the Rey Library (Denny 308).

I will be talking about "Albert Bierstadt and the Western Landscape: Sublime Nature in Distress" in our Connections and Contexts series at the Frye Museum, Thursday May 22, 6:30 pm.

And, last but not least, our students are performing--in German--in the Ethnic Cultural Theatre, 3940 Brooklyn Avenue NE. This year the theme is "Grimms Märchen."

It would be great to see some of you at Germanics events. Bring a friend!

Greetings from a warm and sunny Seattle,

Sabine Wilke
Professor of German and Chair
