Carl Hagenbeck's Empire of Entertainment (UW Press)

Carl Hagenbeck was Europe's P.T. Barnum, a 19th century showman who displayed animals in assembled environments that were a precursor to modern zoos and theme parks. Eric Ames looks at the life and work of Carl Hagenbeck, which helped give rise to a movement in modern popular culture—immersive entertainment.
