The U.S. and Soviet Union were neck-and-neck in a "space race." The U.S. saw education as key to winning the race.
Universities across the country established honors programs to answer the call.
Including the University of Washington Honors Program.
50 years later.
The Cold War ended before today's freshmen were born.
The UW Honors Program has graduated over 8,000 students.
