Latin American Culture in Buenos Aires

The Universidad de San Andrés in Buenos Aires, Argentina, offers a 5-week intensive program in Spanish and Latin American culture to foreign students, June 23 -July 25, 2008. Spanish instruction is at intermediate or advanced level depending on your entering proficiency (the intermediate level requires prior completion of one year of university-level Spanish; the advanced level, two years).

Classes will be held 4 times per week in the mornings with compulsory class attendance. Additional extracurricular activities will be offered during afternoon or evening periods. An optional trip to Iguazú Falls will also be organized. A placement test on the first day of the Program is required for all participants of the Program (non-charged). A welcoming breakfast will be offered on the first day of classes and a closing lunch at the end of the program.

Successful completion of the intensive Spanish and culture program plus an independent research project under the direction of Honors Faculty Joe Norman and Associate Director Julie Villegas earns the equivalent of 12 UW credits. Students can use these credits toward the Honors core requirements. You must work directly with the Spanish department, and receive advance approval, if you wish to receive Spanish credit for language courses taken at San Andrés.

The rich and vibrant cultural life of Buenos Aires, the "Paris of South America", is integrated into the program through visits to museums and other activities. The university arranges for students to live with Argentinean families in a secure, supportive environment. You may also remain at San Andrés afterwards (during the UW Autumn term) to take regular courses across the curriculum (taught in Spanish) with Argentinean students.

San Andrés is a small private liberal arts university that operates at a high international academic standard. The modern campus is beautifully located along the Rio de la Plata in the pleasant Buenos Aires suburb of Victoria. Fast trains run frequently from the campus to the city center. UW Honors faculty have visited the University, and eight UW Honors students have completed the 5-week intensive program in each of the last two years. Housing accommodations are home stays near San Andrés--the cost is $800 (US currency). If a change in home stay family is necessary, San Andrés reserves the right to make changes up to a week before students arrive in Argentina.

Program tuition is $1,600 plus an additional $800 to cover housing and three meals/day with an Argentinean family. Total cost of program is $2,400. This does not cover airfare or personal spending money. Airfare runs approximately $1,200 round-trip. Argentina is relatively inexpensive for visitors from the United States. Because of the effort and expense that San Andrés devotes to this program, once you sign up you may not withdraw later than 2 months (April 23) before the start of the program without remaining obligated to pay the tuition, except in case of a true emergency.

Payment can be made either by check, credit card or by bank transference. Payment is due before the beginning of the program (end of April payment due date).

The program is most appropriate for juniors and seniors with prior foreign experience. Honors will screen applicants by paper application and interviews and accept those best suited for the program. Acceptance is also conditional on attendance and full participation in a 3 part orientation session that includes student research and presentations.
