Ad-Hoc Honors Credit
What is it?
Ad-Hoc Honors is an option available to members of the College and Departmental Honors Programs. Through ad-hoc, a student can contract with an instructor in a non-Honors course to obtain Honors credit. Honors students who elect to "ad-hoc" a course are expected to pursue the course matter to a greater depth and with more intensity than he/she would within the framework of the regular class. The student is prepared to work with the instructor to add extra work and expend the extra energy to do so.
(To receive Honors credit for a non-Honors study abroad course, please see our International Ad-Hoc page)
- Typically, ad-hoc only applies to upper-division courses and cannot be applied to courses that are required for a student's major.
- Introductory language courses and large survey courses are not considered appropriate candidates for ad-hoc credit.
- No more than 15 credits of a student's Honors Core requirements may be satisfied via ad-hoc.
Requirements
Students planning to count an ad-hoc Honors course as part of their Honors core curriculum must:
- Meet with an Honors adviser to make sure that their course choice is appropriate; the adviser must sign the Ad Hoc Honors form (available for download below). For Honors Core credit, see one of the College Honors advisers. For Departmental Honors credit, visit your Departmental Honors adviser.
- Meet with the instructor (preferably before or during the first week of class) to develop the altered course expectations for Honors credit.
- After the course is complete, the supervising instructor must sign the Ad Hoc Honors form. The student should then submit it to the Honors Office in Mary Gates 211.

Suggestions
Each quarter, Honors posts a list of Courses of Interest along with our course selections for that quarter. Many of these courses are appropriate for this ad-hoc option, although they are by no means the only ones available.
