Relationship violence is the most common form of violence to enter the workplace. A US Justice Department and Centers for Disease Control study in 2000 found that almost 25 percent of women and 7 percent of men reported that they had been assaulted by a current or former partner.
Students who are in a relationship where their health and safety may be at risk is should get help as soon as possible. If you are in such a relationship talk to someone you trust about your situation.
If you know a student who is experiencing relationship violence encourage the employee to explore the options for assistance that are available at the UW (see below under ACT) or in the community.
There are a variety of types of "protection orders" that a person can obtain. Forms to obtain a protection order are available in any municipal, district, or superior court.
Tell someone you trust about your situation. Notify the UW Police Department if you have received a direct threat or if you have been harmed.
These UW resources can assist students who who are experiencing or who have concerns about relationship violence.
The Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Information Service (SARIS) is a confidential, free program for students who are victims/survivors of sexual assault or relationship violence and friends, family, and significant others seeking information about sexual assault and relationship violence. Contact SARIS via telephone at 206-685-HELP (685-4357) or e-mail at saris@u.washington.edu.
