Nona Phillips, Director Office of Animal Welfare, holding a plaque recognizing her years of service, with Dave Anderson, Executive Director of Health Sciences Administration

At their May 15 meeting, the Health Sciences Directors and Dave Anderson, HSA Executive Director, recognized Nona Phillips for her excellent service to the University of Washington. As Director of the Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) for over eight years and an IACUC member for 16 years, Nona has consistently demonstrated her expert knowledge, commitment and leadership to the UW animal research and teaching community. Nona joined the UW in 1977 and received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology with a minor in Animal Behavior in 1984. She looks forward to her June 1 retirement but states, “I will miss working for the University and with all the people I have grown to know so well.”

A national search is underway for the new OAW Director. Laurence Istvan, Ph.D., OAW Assistant Director of Operations will serve in an interim leadership role for the 22 professionals in the Office of Animal Welfare during the search.
