Members of Sigma Kappa Sorority should try to attend chapter events as much as possible, Vice President of New Member Education Shannon Barry said Monday at the chapter house.

The issue of a lack of participation during Sigma Kappa’s events arose during the meeting among the members.

“Upperclassmen should be encouraging the freshman to get involved within the house to foster sisterhood,” Barry said.

Emotions in the room were mixed. Some women spoke up about having other types of events, while other members voiced their lack of time.

“I don’t think the house should have upperclassmen attend events that are more freshman-oriented,” senior Elizabeth Newmark said.

To encourage attendance, members proposed changing the times and types of events the house planned as well as letting people know the date and time of the event well in advance.

Several officers spoke about the events they were planning with other Greek chapters.

  • Zeta Tau Alpha is promoting Breast Cancer Awareness month – Greek members are asked to wear pink to class this Wednesday.
  • There will be a cake decoration exchange with Sigma Alpha Epsilon on Thursday.
  • Charity Denim will be held at the end of this month and people are encouraged to invite friends and family.

Other events sparked a moment of reflection and pride among the members.

“I’m setting up a care package going to my cousin and his troop in Iraq, they’d appreciate letters, and any sort of money donation so I can buy care package products,” said Vice President of Alumnae Relations Holly Graves. “He’s told me all his friends are looking forward to it.”

The members discussed ways to improve the chapter house. Sigma Kappa’s Parents Club wants to use the money they raised to purchase a new television for the house.

Several members expressed concerns that the money should be used for something more important and were instructed to send all their ideas to the club secretary, Cristina Rabang.

Sleeping porch etiquette was an important issue since the weather is getting colder. People who are having coughing attacks should remove themselves from the porch as to not wakeup the other women.

“People should also keep in mind that some people sleep in their rooms,” said Executive Vice President Brynn Harken. “If everyone could keep their notice level down after 10:30 p.m. then there would be less complaints.”

Another aspect that could be improved upon was the issue of keeping food out of certain rooms. Several rooms have been found to have leftover food wrappers and a few dishes left in them.

Attendees found that lack of responsibility irritating and disgusting.

“People need to realize that your mom isn’t going to pick up after you,” said Melissa Louis.

Philanthropy Chair Annie Morris initiated a vote on who to send to Delta Upsilon’s Court. Members discussed who they thought would be the two best candidates for the position. Women for Erica Legaspi noted that she was outgoing and already friends with several of the fraternity gentlemen.

Incumbents Krista Staudinger and Krista Yeasting were thought to be perfect candidates since they reflected the chapter well and had experience in preparing skits.

Krista Yeasting and Erica Legaspi were nominated to represent the house.
