Structure and Divisions

Division of Clinical Trials

Division of Clinical Trials will focus on the clinical trial phase of testing treatment or diagnostic efficacy. This is analogous to Phase II and Phase III research studies. This division will be headed by Dr. Jeffrey Probstfield, Professor of Cardiology and current director of the UW K-30 Program. The Co-Director will be Dr. Thomas Fleming, Chair of the Department of Biostatistics.

CORE FACILITIES

Center for AIDS and STDs

The Center is an umbrella organization that in turn houses the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit; the AIDS Education and Training Center; the AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit, the HIV Prevention Trials Unit, the STD Cooperative Research Center, the Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trial Unit and a host of related clinical, research, education, and community programs. These include the HIV/AIDS Biostatistics Core directed by Chair of Biostatistics Tom Fleming. (King Holmes, MD, PhD, Medicine, Director)

HIV Vaccine Trials Network

International collaboration of 25 research institutions that conduct HIV vaccine trials in humans. Funded by NIAID and headquartered at FHCRC. Statistical , data management and laboratory expertise provide by centralized facilities here and in collaboration with Duke. HVTN trials evaluate HIV vaccine regimens designed to reduce frequency of HIV acquisition, progression and transmission. (Larry Corey, MD, Director)

Cystic Fibrosis Clinical and Research Center

This center provides infrastructure, protocol design, study management, statistical support, and data management for cystic fibrosis clinical research. Its biostatistical and data management units are supported by the NIH National Center for Research Resources. (Bonnie Ramsey, MD,Ý Pediatrics, Director)

NIAMS Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center

This Center focuses on common musculoskeletal disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, and neck pain. It has a methodology core and four component projects, including a randomized trial of surgical vs. non-surgical care for carpal tunnel syndrome. It also serves as the coordinating center for a multisite randomized trial of vertebroplasty. A recently completed study was an RCT of alternative diagnostic imaging strategies for patients with back pain. (Richard Deyo, MD, Medicine, Health Svc, Director)

Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) Statistical Center

SWOG is a national consortium of institutions and investigators organized for conducting cancer clinical trials. The SWOG Statistical Center is co-located at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB). The Statistical Center assists with study design, protocol development, data management, quality control, data analysis, and statistical research. Not only are there ongoing trials, but data and samples from several large completed clinical trials which are appropriate for further analysis. (John Crowley PhD, Biostatistics, Director)

Women's Health Initiative

The FHCRC is home to the Women's Health Initiative Clinical Coordinating Center. This 15-year trial involves more than 160,000 women nationwide, and 3,500 in Washington state. The study is examining the effects of hormone replacement therapy on cardiac disease, osteoporosis, and cancer in women. Both the coordinating center and the Seattle Clinical Center are based here, and the study will provide data for analysis of numerous secondary questions. (Ross Prentice, PhD, Biostatistics, Director)

Center for Health Studies, Group Health Coop.

The CHS houses several clinical trials. Because it has a defined population and excellent data systems, Group Health is an unusually good site for conducting clinical trials.Examples are large trials of alternative treatments for back pain (chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture), patient education materials, antidepressant drug therapy, and behavioral interventions for chronic disease management. (Eric Larson MD, MPH, Director)

Neurosurgery Clinical Trials

The Department of Neurosurgery is home to several randomized trials of procedures, devices, and drugs. These include studies of intraoperative hypothermia, balloon catheter prophylaxis of intracranial aneurysms, hemicraniectomy for cerebral edema, and several drugs and biologics for post-trauma or post-stroke care. (Nancy Temkin, PhD, Director)

Cardiovascular Clinical Trials Center

This center has been home to several landmark clinical trials, such as CAST and AVID. Ongoing trials include studies of implantable defibrillators, emergency care of cardiac arrest, and antiarrhythmic therapy. (Alfred Hallstrom PhD, Biostatistics, Director)

Clinical Trials Service Unit, Division of Cardiology

This unit identifies new clinical sites for clinical trails and provides subsequent support regarding protocol interpretation and logistics. It has provided support for many multicenter cardiovascular trials, including HOPE, ALLHAT, and ACCORD. (Jeffrey Probstfield, MD, Medicine/Cardiology, Director)

Alzheimer's Dis. Research Center ; Nat. Alzheimer's Coordinating Center

These centers are home to a variety of translational and clinical trial projects. Current randomized trials include a study of simvastatin to slow progression of Alzheimer's, new drugs and supplements, and trials of therapy for agitation and psychosis in dementia. Also supports population-based epidemiologic studies. (Murray Raskind MD, Psychiatry, Walter Kukull PhD, Epidemiology, Directors)

School of Nursing Clinical Studies Unit

This unit provides space that can be shared by investigators throughout the School. The Unit includes 3 exam/interview rooms and a reception area; 2 group interview/conference rooms, and research project offices. They are equipped for biofeedback, automatic blood pressure monitoring, noninvasive hemodynamics, and activity monitoring. Consultation is available in design, grant preparation, measurement, statistics, use of statistical analysis packages, and computer applications. A bioengineer is available to consult regarding bioinstrumentation in complex research studies. (Pamela Mitchell, PhD, Director).

Regional Clinical Dental Res. Center

A 5000 sq. foot facility with seven operatories, and biomedical and biobehavioral labs dedicated to clinical dental research.

Magnetic Resonance Research Laboratory

Provides MR imaging, spectroscopy, and functional MRI services, guidance in data analysis, and development of specialized techniques for individual investigators. Equipment includes a whole-body 1.5T system with full imaging and broad-band spectroscopic capabilities; a 4.7 T, 30cm bore magnet capable of high-speed and high-resolution imaging; and a 7T, 8cm vertical bore magnet for broad-band spectroscopy. (Kenneth Maravilla, MD, Radiology, Director)

Videoendoscopic Surgery Center

Supports basic and applied research through Departments of Surgery, Bioengineering, and Bio Robotics. (Mika Sinanan MD, Surgery, Director)
