Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC)
In 2001, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Childrenís Hospital Regional Medical Center joined to create the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, maximizing patient care and research opportunities. It is one of 28 comprehensive cancer research centers designated by the National Cancer Institute. The Hutchinson Center employs over 2,500 people and is headed by Lee Hartwell, PhD (Nobel Laureate, 2002). The Center provides a unique environment for basic and applied science in each of its four scientific divisions: 1) The Basic Sciences Division, focused on basic research in cellular and molecular biology; 2) The Clinical Research Division, renowned for its bone marrow transplant program (the largest in the world, founded by Nobel Laureate E. Donnall Thomas), as well as studies on tumor, viral immunology, and infectious diseases in pediatric oncology; 3) The Public Health Sciences Division, with primary areas of research in biostatistics, cancer biology, cancer prevention research and epidemiology; and 4) The Human Biology Division, which seeks to integrate the research interests of all three scientific areas. The Public Health Sciences Division has grown rapidly in the last 15 years and now houses a Cancer Outcomes Training Grant headed by Scott Ramsey, MD, PhD. This division has 800 Center-based faculty and staff, with direct cost revenues over $71.8 million per year. It is the site for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and the Womenís Health Initiative Coordinating Centers. As part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UW, FHCRC, and Childrenís Hospital have formed the consortium Research Trials Office, with seven divisions: Clinical Informatics, Biostatistics, Protocol Review and Monitoring, Clinical Trials Support, Regulatory Affairs, Research Ethics, and the Puget Sound Oncology Consortium (community outreach).
