School of Dentistry

The School of Dentistry has 220 dental students, with 92 graduate students and residents and 80 full-time and 41 part-time faculty. There are specialty programs leading to the Master of Science in Dentistry, or to a Certificate in Periodontics, Endodontics, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Biology, Oral Pathology, and Oral Medicine. In addition, the school offers the PhD Degree through the Department of Oral Biology. Among the 50 U.S. dental schools, it consistently ranks first or second in research grants from the national institute on Dental and Craniofacial Research, and in the last round of the National Board Part II exams, the UW students compiled the highest average scores in the country. There are two comprehensive, interdisciplinary T32 training grants housed in the School ñ one in Cross Disciplinary Oral Science that emphasizes basic science research training, and one in Public Health and Behavioral Research that emphasizes translational and clinical research training. The School is a participant with four other universities in the Western Oral Research Consortium, a K12 training grant designed to support faculty development in clinical research among participating institutions. The School also offers the Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods, a six-week program that has trained approximately 240 dental faculty and researchers since it was initially offered in 1992.
