School of Medicine
The School of Medicine has a full-time faculty of over 1,800 and a medical student body of 782. Its four major teaching hospitals -- UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Childrenís Hospital, and the VA Puget Sound Health Care Systemóare staffed by full-time UW faculty who act as a single unit in making decisions and effecting policy. Likewise, research and housestaff training programs are wholly integrated across all institutions in all departments, contributing to a tradition of interdisciplinary research and collaborative efforts.
The medical school has flourished through synergistic interaction of superb basic science, translational clinical research, clinical trials, and health services research. Clinical Research Training programs are numerous, including some 48 T-32 training grants. Similarly, the School of Medicine is home to some 2500 funded research projects involving human subjects. The Office of Clinical Research represents a major commitment to establishing an infrastructure for clinical trials. A coordinator and other positions within the School of Medicine now deal directly with the physician-scientist and industrial interface, and ensure an environment conducive to these studies. The Office promotes both peer-reviewed grant funded and industry-sponsored clinical trials. In concert with the Industry Relations Office, it provides a point of contact for industry leaders. A major focus is providing educational resources to investigators and staff, including the online Guidance for UW investigators on Clinical Practice vs. Clinical Research and a lecture series on Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
