High-Speed Data Connectivity, DSL

UW Medical Center's Teleservices department, in partnership with Information Technology Services (ITS) and Verizon, now make it easy for patients, families, and visitors to connect to the internet during their stay at UW Medical Center.

The internet connection is an IP DSL service, a switchable service through the UW Medical Center telephone system. Service is available in most rooms and some common areas.

Activating the DSL Port

NOTE: Patients must have their own laptop or computer to connect to the internet via DSL or DIAL UP. Follow these 5 easy steps:

1. Locate an orange labeled jack with "UWMC DSL".
2. Connect your network cable into the labeled jack as well as your network port or card in your computer, then turn on your computer.
3. Make sure the computer is configured for DHCP.  Note: IT Services and Teleservices are NOT able to assist with configuring computers.
4. Teleservices will provide the appropriate network cable upon request.
5. If you are unable to locate a "UWMC DSL" jack in your room contact Teleservices at 598-6970 with your room number and we will verify connectivity to your room.

Bring Your Laptop!

Patients and patient family members may bring their personal computers to the medical center. For your safety, these devices must be in good physical condition in the judgment of your nurse. Computers are restricted in the ICU and OR's. The computer or laptop must be equipped with a "NIC" card. The laptop user will need to know how to set up the network properties on their computer, which need to be configured for DHCP.

DSL jacks can be found in the following locations:

  • Surgery Waiting Area - 2nd Floor Surgery Pavilion, Room L2000
  • Surgery Center - 2nd Floor Surgery Pavilion, Room SP2005
  • Digestive Disease - 3rd Surgery Pavilion, Room SP3005
  • Surgical Specialties - 3rd Surgery Pavilion, Room SP3201
  • Pre-Anesthesia - 3rd Surgery Pavilion, Room SP3301
  • 6th Floor Waiting Area - Cascade Tower between 6 Northeast and 6 Southeast
  • 5 East ICU Waiting Area - Pacific Tower, Room CC528

You must receive authorization from the patient's nurse. The nurse may inspect the computer and any accessories to ensure that they are in good physical condition and it's appropriate to allow use of the computer in the intended location per UWMC policy.

This service is NOT connected to the existing ethernet network used throughout the medical center and will not affect the day-to-day information flow.
