Dr. Shalit's practice of primary care internal medicine has unusual demographics. Although
his practice serves patients of all demographics, Dr. Shalit has a particular interest in the
care of sexual minority individuals (gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals)
as well as in the care of people with HIV. He practices in a 3-person office along with a Family
Practice physician and a Physician Assistant. The clinic provides care for approximately 1,000
HIV-infected patients who comprise about 25% of the overall population served by the practice.
Objectives:
- Observe the day-to-day operation of an independent primary care practice
- Learn about the particular medical and psychosocial needs of GLBT individuals
- Gain experience in the primary care of HIV-infected individuals including the prescribing
and monitoring of antiretroviral therapy
