There is a pre-clinic conference, given by each of the attendings, the
fellow and the residents. In a 2 month rotation the resident would have
one conference to present, topic of his/her choice.
The resident can expect to see 5-6 patients/session, usually 3 new and
the others returning visits. There is a variety of pathology, including
reflux disease, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, colon cancer screening,
irritable bowel disease, inflammatory bowel, abnormal LFTs, blood in the
stool, hepatitis C and B, and motility disorders, such as gastroparesis.
There are 2-3 attendings in clinic and the resident will get patients
from the attending's schedules. The attendings endeavor to pick the more
interesting cases for the residents. The resident evaluates the patient,
presents to the attending from whose schedule the patient was selected
and formulates a plan of care. The resident will see the patient on follow
up.
