Re:
Clinic Block Responsibilities and Conferences
We want to welcome you to clinic block and describe some of the conferences and responsibilities during your clinic block. Clinic block is a mixture of general medicine (continuity) clinics at your base hospital, subspecialty and primary care clinics throughout the UW system and the community, and teaching conferences. Your clinic block experience is an opportunity within our residency program to gain exposure to outpatient medicine. As we are all aware, medicine is no longer just an inpatient specialty. In fact, inpatient medicine comprises only a small fraction of what the practicing internist does in the "real world". More and more, the outpatient setting assumes the burden of caring for a wider spectrum and higher acuity of illness than ever before. We feel confident that you will find your months of outpatient medicine and the continuity clinic experience to be a valuable and enjoyable part of your residency training. All residents in our program have clinic blocks scheduled throughout the three years of training. Your clinic block schedule can be found on www.amion.com under your personal schedule. Descriptions of the clinics can be found on the residency website at depts.washington.edu/uwmedres/places/ambulatory/index.htm. We would recommend calling each clinic prior to your first visit to confirm the start time and confirm that they are expecting you. Feel free to contact the Ambulatory Program Manager (Samantha Groom) or the contact person listed below at your base hospital if you have questions:

VAMC Director: Traci Takahashi, MD 277-5063 570-3313
  Contact: Veronica Falter
To augment the clinic experiences, an ambulatory curriculum has been developed which consists of several conferences of various formats and topics as discussed below. These conferences are a mandatory part of the clinic block rotations. The conferences have been organized by the chief residents and the directors of the primary care program for your benefit. Your participation and your feedback are critical to the success of the teaching program. Residents are expected to attend all conferences and to contribute, and at certain conferences, present topics or lead discussions. If there are particular subjects which interest you, or faculty from which you would like to learn, please let us know.

General Medicine Conference:
Thursday, 11:30-12:30
UWMC, RR-110. (year-round)
These are one-hour sessions covering topics related to the clinical practice of outpatient internal medicine presented by faculty members. Lunch provided.

Occasionally, residents will be assigned a half day of Systems-based practice (SBP) during clinic block. This time is scheduled to allow residents the opportunity to catch up on clinical responsibilities and to use for self-directed learning. Appointments of a personal nature may be scheduled during this time, but should be done so with discretion. Clinic and conference responsibilities are considered equal in importance to inpatient responsibilities.

If an unexpected emergency arises and you are unable to attend a scheduled clinic or conference, please contact the Ambulatory Program Manager, Chief Resident, or Clinic Coordinator at your base hospital. Missing a clinic without first contacting the appropriate individuals is considered failure to show for work, and could result in disciplinary action. In addition, we expect that during working hours (generally 8AM to 5PM), you will leave your pager on, in case your clinic or the residency office needs to reach you. Again, welcome to clinic block. We hope that you find the experience worthwhile and stimulating. We look forward to working with you.
