Doctors
Without Borders (Medecins
Sans Frontieres)
Requires two or more years of residency. There is a minimum commitment
of six months for first-time volunteers. Infectious disease, tropical
medicine or public health experience (MPH) is valuable. Fluency in French,
Portuguese, Spanish or Russian is helpful.

Partners in Health
Program in Infectious Disease and Social Change, Harvard Medical School
in association with WHO and Gates Foundation.
Primarily working with multi-drug resistant TB and HIV in Haiti, Peru,
Russia and Mexico. Respective language skills required. Minimum stay is
one month. Scholarships are available.
Doctors of
the World (Medecins du Monde)
Primarily working with refugees in Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, Kosovo,
Russia, South Africa and Mexico. Minimum of one month.
Health Volunteers Overseas
Focus is on training local health care providers. Community, academic
and retired physicians are welcome. Usually there is a one-month commitment
but sometimes 2 weeks are possible. Projects are available in Africa,
Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. Families are welcome.
Room and board are provided, need to pay for own transportation. Sponsored
by the American College of Physicians – American Society of Internal
Medicine (ACP – ASIM).
International Medical
Corps
Provides worldwide response to man-made and natural disasters. Long-term:
6-month paid positions. Short-term: 1 month or longer volunteer positions.
Mostly involves clinical work and teaching of local health care providers.
Doctors for Global
Health
Focus is on health and human rights. Primarily working in El Salvador,
Chiapas, Peru, and Uganda. Students and residents are welcome. Short-term:
1 week to 1 month.

World Vision
Program is not widely known for medical contributions but widely involved
in community programs all over the world. There are several programs to
teach and provide preventive health in different regions.

Physicians for Human
Rights
Main goal is to promote the human rights of all people. PHR members work
to stop torture, disappearances, and political killings by governments
and opposition groups; to improve health and sanitary conditions in prisons
and detention centers; to investigate the physical and psychological consequences
of violations of humanitarian law in internal and international conflicts;
to defend medical neutrality and the right of civilians and combatants
to receive medical care during times of war; to protect health professionals
who are victims of violations of human rights; and to prevent medical
complicity in torture and other abuses.
Multidisciplinary
International Research Training (MIRT)
MIRT is a national program designed to encourage undergraduates, graduates,
and faculty to do health-related population-based research and training
in developing countries. The program is funded by the Fogarty International
Center of the National Institutes of Health. The University of Washington
MIRT Program has been developed in collaboration with Western Washington
University and Dillard University. The program builds on established UW
linkages with academic institutions throughout the developing world, including
in Zimbabwe, Ecuador, and Peru. Research opportunities are designed collaboratively
with faculty in these institutions to address health issues pertinent
to their countries. Undergraduate and graduate fellows will be eligible
to receive academic credit through the University of Washington or from
their respective institutions. Financial support includes: monthly stipend,
airfare, living expenses and health insurance.
IE3 Global
Internships
IE3 Global Internships (formerly Global Graduates - The Oregon International
Internship Program) was created by the Oregon University System to provide
university students with an improved understanding of global issues and
equip them with professional experience and international competence.
Internships range from ten weeks to six months of full-time work. Need
to pay tuition.
Foundation For Sustainable
Development (Action Without Borders)
Opportunity to gain hands on development experience with grassroots development
organizations in Latin America and Africa. Spanish is required for Latin
American work.
Individual
Volunteer Program
Program is run by the United Methodist Church. Volunteer opportunities
from 2 months to 2 years.
The
GATES Foundation
Scholarships and fellowships available for postgraduates interested in
addressing global problems related to health, technology, and social equity.
