Evaluations

Evaluation Submission

Attendings and supervising residents evaluate residents' clinical competence at the end of each rotation.  Residents and medical students complete clinical teaching assessments of faculty and senior residents.  The evaluation instrument for clinical competence is based upon materials developed by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is utilized by virtually all internal medicine training programs in the United States.  The Clinical Teaching Assessment form was initially developed at the University of Washington School of Medicine and is currently used to evaluate faculty and post-graduate trainees teaching throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Evaluations are completed using Verinform, our web-based evaluation system.  You have been provided with information/instructions. If you need additional information, contact the Medicine Residency Office.  Prior to being placed in residents' files, evaluations are reviewed by the Program Director.  Residents are encouraged to review their evaluations online or in the Residency Program Office at any time.

Residents are expected to evaluate their rotation, attending, chief resident, and other team members at the end of each rotation. Evaluations should be submitted before changing rotations.  Residents' evaluations provide valuable information that is used to determine the structure of the training program.  They are particularly influential in determining who will be asked to serve as an attending.  Please complete your evaluations promptly each rotation.

Evaluation and Counseling Meetings

Residents receive formal counseling and evaluation twice a year.  Traditional and Seattle Primary Care residents meet once with either the Program Director or the Associate Program Director and once with a faculty member from their continuity clinic.  Primary Care-Seattle/Boise track follow the above model for years one and three and meet twice during the R2 year with the Chief of Medicine at the Boise VAMC, Dr. Jack Boice.  Because Preliminary residents do not have a continuity clinic, they will meet with either the Program Director or Associate Program Director twice during the course of the year.

Clinical performance and career goals will be discussed during each meeting.  Clinic supervisors are sent up-to-date evaluation summary and comparative data for each resident scheduled to meet the following quarter.  The faculty evaluator summarizes the discussion on a form that is returned to the Residency Program Office and is placed in the resident's file.  A time-line for semi-annual meetings follows:

with Program Director or Associate Director with Clinic Supervisor with VA Boise Chief of Medicine
R1s Traditional January - May September - November
PCIP - Seattle January - May September - November
PCIP - Boise January - May September - November
Preliminary Sep-Nov & Jan-May
R2s Traditional September - November January - March
PCIP - Seattle September - November January - March
PCIP - Boise     Fall & Spring
R3s Traditional July - December April - June

At the end of each year of training, the Residency Program Director prepares a detailed, summative evaluation for each resident that is shared with the individual and is submitted to the American Board of Internal Medicine.
