Inclement Weather Policy Department of Medicine Medicine Residency Program Residents in the University of Washington Internal Medicine Residency Program are professionals and as such are responsible for ensuring that all patient care obligations are met regardless of absence due to inclement weather. In the event that the University is in operation but a resident requests
time off to deal with unanticipated problems related to natural disasters
or severe weather conditions, chief residents, attending physicians, and
program directors may approve requests to work less than the regular work
schedule. Full day absences due to inclement weather in excess of the
usual days off for a rotation, may be charged to leave balance. If the
resident is on an ambulatory rotation, it may be possible to flex the
resident’s schedule to make up missed clinics.
