Job Description

The Henry Ford seeks an experienced, knowledgeable, and dynamic individual with a proven curatorial track record to join a committed team of intellectually curious colleagues as Curator of Communications and Information Technology.  The Curator of Communications and Information Technology manages and participates in the development, research, and interpretation of The Henry Ford’s world-class American communications and information technology collections.  These collections, dating from 17th century to present, document the range of technologies used to disseminate knowledge and move information, and offer insight into the impact that improved access to knowledge and increased speed of communication continues to have on our lives. 

In addition to Collections and Content Expertise the curator participates in program and exhibition development, as well as other relevant initiatives at The Henry Ford. 

 

Job Requirements

This position demands a deep and broad understanding of significant American objects, stories, and lives to lead the intellectual direction of this major collection area by developing collections plans that align strategically with the mission and the vision of The Henry Ford.  In addition, the curator is responsible for cataloguing collections, including writing narratives for online presentations according to specified deadlines, and recommending objects for exhibition and program use, ensuring accuracy, authenticity, and accessibility.  The curator must practice a high standard of public history using the best scholarship to create broadly accessible programs and products for the diverse audiences served by The Henry Ford.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in American History or related field; knowledge of the history of communications and information technology and related fields; knowledge of American social and cultural history with an emphasis on the 20th century; and knowledge of American material culture.  Minimum five years’ professional experience - curatorial or related experience preferred.  Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills required.  Computer skills that support current curatorial practices.  Demonstrated knowledge of the history of technology, with an in-depth knowledge of communications and information technologies and their social impact.
