Professor Bailkin's research has included work on race and portraiture in modern Britain and its empire, focusing on the construction of new palettes for skin tones by British artists in the context of pseudo-scientific theories of racial difference. Other research focuses on the impact of non-white immigration and decolonization on English legal theory, and the evolution of the doctrine of provocation and the concept of the "reasonable man."
