Internship Spotlights

Nadia Arambula,
Field Museum,
Collections

"I was fortunate to intern at the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, this summer.  I worked in the Anthropology Collections Department under, the collections manager who primarily oversees the European and Asian collections....The museum draws local, national, and international tourists interested in natural history.  From my vantage point in collections, though, the public I interacted with most often were researchers."

Hillary Saalfeld,
Seattle Center Foundation,
Exhibits

"The chance to create a long-term exhibit for a major Seattle Foundation was too good an opportunity to pass up! From being given freedom to design our own exhibit to the difficulties that accompany installation, I had an enjoyable, and challenging, learning."

Siri Linz,
Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society,
Collections

"My internship at the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society (PSMHS) has been an informative experience about the inner workings of a small organization. ... I was able to perform tasks from all across the museum world like: rehousing, customer service, ordering paper goods, organizing storage, PastPerfect, outreach, accessions/deaccessions, and reconciling loaned objects. I think it is a great experience to work in a small museum because you feel more connected to the overall mission and core of the institution."

Liz Penttila,
Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture,
Exhibits

"This internship may be the most practical and the most fun I have yet experienced. I met a variety of important figures in the local museum world, I got to work closely with objects in a new setting, and most of all I had fun doing it."

Justine Walker,
Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture,
Education

"In retrospect, while it is a lot of work to make a day like that happen without any snags, I look forward to opportunities like this in the future.  I feel like it strengthens the connection between different parts of the museum—in this case education, Mammalogy, genetic resources, and even a biology graduate student—while offering a fantastic opportunity to local teachers."

Hillary Saalfeld,
Washington State Holocaust Research Center,
Collections

"Pursuing an internship with the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center was one of the best decisions I made during my time in the UW Museology program....I solidified my classroom knowledge through hands-on experience, gained confidence in my abilities as a professional, and contributed to the well-being of an institution for which I have enormous respect."

Xiaoxue Zhou,
Museum of Chinese in America,
Collections

"I had a great time in MOCA and I am glad that I spent my summer in MOCA as a collection intern.  Since I was the only intern who could write and read Chinese, I had an opportunitiy to work on projects that interns usually don't have access to."
