FINAL EXAM - TEACHING & PERFORMANCE

1. Teaching Jury

As the first portion of the final assessment in this course, you will be teaching a lesson based on one of the items listed below. Lessons will be 4 minutes in length.

Lessons will be taught in the order in which they appear below. The teachers will be selected at random at the final, so prepare to teach any of the 15 lessons. To make final preparations, each teacher will be excused from the final during the lesson preceding his/her own.

As with the practica throughout the term, teaching will be evaluated according to the following guidelines:
  • Demonstration of high-magnitude behavior (eye contact, speaking voice, etc.)
  • Student engagement in musical activity
  • Teacher command of the material
  • Clarity of musical tasks / specificity of feedback
  • and most of all . . . Improvement in performance / achievement of objective(s) - BEAUTY!
No lesson plan is required for this assessment. However, you are welcome to use books, notes or any other materials you wish as part of your preparation and while you are teaching.

2. Performance Jury

As the second portion of the final assessment in this course, you will be performing a brief solo on your secondary instrument. You may sign up for a performance slot on my office door beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11.

Solos must comprise a song (not an exercise) from either one of your method books. Your selection should be at least as advanced as your second SmartMusic solo, though you may not perform the same piece. Selections included among the teaching jury repertoire (nos. 4-6, 8-9) are eligible. You are welcome and encouraged to work with your teaching partner in preparation for this performance, however the performance itself will be for me alone.
