Ports represent a large economic investment for a region and the economic loss when shipping is discontinued can be significant.   For this reason a NEES grand challenge is being performed to evaluate Seismic Risk Mitigation of Port Systems.

 

The University of Washington is currently conducting research to analyze the behavior of pile to deck connections under seismic loading.

 

 

 

Over the past 10 years the University of Washington has tested 8 2/3 scale specimens.  These specimens consist of a reinforced concrete deck supported by a concrete pile.  The 8 tests varied connection details, axial load and pile type.

 

Current University of Washington research involves 4 new test, which will be full scale and vary connection details.
