How to become a coach

Interested in Becoming a Coach?

Coaching with the UW Navy Sail team is a unique and amazing opportunity to work with some of the finest young men and women that this country has to offer in a challenging environment unlike any other. Although many of our coaches are prior, or active duty military, this is not a requirement. Additionally, while many of our coaches are members of the Seattle Yacht Club, this is also not a requirement.

You must be an expert sailor and have an innate desire to teach and share your nautical experience with our Midshipman. In many cases, our Coaches are directly responsible not just for training, but for the safe operation of our Navy Sailing Vessels. Because of this, a significant level of trust and confidence must be held in our coaches by the Commanding Officer of the NROTC Unit.

To this end, each of our Coaches have submitted a resume of their sailing history that includes Training, Racing, Passages, and other noteworthy items. After an observation period onboard our 44 foot training vessels, and completion of a qualification card, one is formally designated as a Coach, or Officer In Charge, by the Commanding Officer.

If you are interested, but unsure about our program and how you fit in, feel free to contact us. We would love to have you aboard during one of our training sails or races!
